Christmas 2013

Christmas 2013 was a very memorable Christmas!  Christmas Eve day started out with H being flat out rude to me for some time.  So, after some time, I left for some time.  When I got home, we tried to play outside, but the whining, crying and fighting made it no fun.  Just before our annual neighborhood potluck, H fell and scraped her knees.  I got her cleaned up but she refused to walk, so I had to carry her to the potluck and sit with her on my lap while we tried to eat.  And of course, Christian wanted to be on my lap too.  On a positive note, Cameron was completely independent, getting his own food, going back for more etc.  The kids were pretty worn out, so they asked to came home and get ready for bed.  Then we tried to read the Christmas story, but after Chuck could handle to fighting over me no longer, he slammed the book and sent them off to bed.  All of them crying (as they should have been).  They eventually settled and went to sleep. Chuck said he thought we should tell Santa not to come.  Although, I agreed and was very tempted, I couldn't do it. So Santa came with a note to them that said,  "Despite your naughtiness, I am still leaving gifts.  Please try to be nice!"    Then, as I was sound asleep, I woke up to 3 kids in my bedroom and Christian shouting, "Santa came! "Santa came!".  I looked at the clock and it said 11:50pm!  Needless to say we sent the kids back to bed.   However, Christian wouldn't go, so he slept with me. And I never sleep well with kids in my bed.  Chuck slept in the living room to guard the tree.  The kids got up at 6am and when they did, I asked them what happened in the night.  As near as I could piece together, Cameron woke up for a drink and didn't have any water in his bed, so he woke up Christian so he could give him his water and Christian said, "Let's go see if Santa came."  So off they went stopping on their way to wake up Hannah.  After getting up the second time, they played with gifts from Santa, Charity came over and we had breakfast and opened the rest of our gifts. We went for a hike at South Mountain that was long and difficult, but all the kids are amazing hikers!  They played with our neighbors much of the day and Lily and Emma come over for dinner.  It ended up being a pretty nice day.

Ages Eight, Six and Three .... remembering what they were like

Cameron is eight and in the 3rd grade. He is 4 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 58 lbs.   He enjoys riding his bike and has just started riding a bike with gears, which he thinks is very cool.  He loves to watch TV, movies and play games on the computer.  He likes to be read to more than he likes to read himself.  I read the Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief series with him and we are working on the Harry Potter Series.  He and Chuck are reading the Lord of the Rings series. But he does enjoy reading each night before he goes to bed.  When he wants to read something short, he goes for something like "Little Critter".  And at times, I have heard him reading to Christian.  When he wants to read something more challenging, he enjoys "The Box Car Children", "Magic Tree House", and to my disapproval, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid."  Over the summer, we read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because that is how I often describe Cameron.  He is helpful and selfish, friendly and grumpy, caring and tyranical, acutely aware and completely clueless.  We constantly receive compliments for teachers that Cameron is such a hard worker, good student, etc.  But if you ask him how school was, he will most likely say, "It was horrible."  His main complaint about school is that many of his classmates don't listen to direction and a lot of time is spent waiting on them to do so. Each morning, he says he does not want to go.  And when it is time to do homework, I'm sure he'd rather the world come to an end than have to do it.  But I do know he is a good student and hard working.  He ran for student congress and won!  However, he had little to say about their first meeting.  C has started taking on more responsibility in the home.  He is mowing the lawn and taking out the recycling.  He is playing volleyball thru the YMCA with me as the coach.  He is a great little player.  He isn't afraid to go after the ball and it doesn't phase him that he is the only boy in the league.  C has also started piano lessons.  He loves to go to his lessons and he does practice.  But I had to provide a little incentive for that to happen more regularly.  I pay him 25 cents for each 15 minutes he practices.  C is completing a second year as a wolf cub, but we are working on electives, belt loops and pins that he has not yet achieved.  And C loves to spend time with his friends.  His best friends still remain to be Corbin and Carson even thought they have both moved away and we don't see them as often as we used to.

Hannah is six and in the 1st grade.  She is about 31/2 feet tall and weighs about 40 lbs.  She is a happy little girl that you don't want to upset.  Like Cameron, she can have a dual personality.  However, most of the time she is very helpful.  But she can be very sassy.  She loves to play pretend...house, restaurant, school etc.  She also loves to draw and color.  She loves school and unlike Cameron, she can't wait to do her homework.  But is very diligent when she works and doesn't ever feel the pressure to work quickly.  She loves to read and write.  We have been reading the Little House Series.  We are currently working on Farmer Boy.  Because it is about Almanzo rather than Laura and Mary, she does not enjoy it as much.  She will often read for an hour in her bed after she has been tucked in.  Hannah loves to change clothes and she has a style all her own.  She enjoys brushing her hair and has been willing to let me try many different styles. Sometimes she creates her own and asks me to do it.  Her latest "do" is two pony tails on the sides and two braids in the back.  Hannah is working on her second year as a Daisy Girl Scout.  Her best friends are Natalie and Kendra.

Christian is a typical three year old.  He has two speeds, full steam ahead and complete stop.  He can be outgoing and shy.  He can be adventurous and hesitant.  He be tough and wimpy.  He is very happy most of the time and usually very helpful.  But as he learns to do new things, he can get very frustrated.  He loves preschool and as with all my kids, he is a great student.  When he is not at school, he is my best buddy.  We do everything together.  My favorite thing to do is take a nap, but that doesn't happen very often.  His favorite thing to do is go to the zoo.  He loves to be out and about, so we grab a friend quite often and go for a field trip.  He loves his friends Davis and Knox.  He is my best sleeper, almost never getting out of bed at night.  And sometimes he will just put himself to be because he is tired.  Christian plays with anything...cars, dolls, barbies, legos.  He is a great independent player, but I hear quite often, "Mom, play with me."  He is really a lot of fun to have around.
