Spring Break 2015

I did not plan much for Spring Break this year, but we managed to stay busy.  Our neighbors were home for several days of the break, so the kids spent a lot of time with them.  The kids also had a couple play dates.  We spent a little time cleaning and lots of time being active.  We hiked, swam, ran, and biked.

Wind Cave Hike - Usery Pass

This wind cave hike is a 3.2 mile out and back hike.  I had heard it was an easy trail, so I thought it would be fun to take the kids.  It was not easy and not fun.  Cameron took his friend Noah.  It started out gentle but as it got rougher, the older boys forged on ahead and Christian got slower.  And it wasn't too long before he started complaining.  (I felt bad because I had H and little C in sneakers and they really needed hiking boots).  I told H to go on ahead and when she got to the cave, where I knew the boys would be, to head back down with them because I didn't think Christian would make it.  But when he heard me say that, he insisted on going all the way.  H still went on ahead but as the trail got a little tricky to navigate at times, I started getting nervous she might get lost.  This is a very popular trail, so fortunately, there were lots of people around to show the way.  Christian and I did make it to the top and as we were getting close, the boys were on their way down saying they had been waiting 20 minutes.  I made them go back up with us and we had a little snack at the top.  Coming down was faster, but little C still complained and I had to carry him some of the way and the boys had to wait on us for a while.  All the kids are such amazing hikers!  But it was probably just a little too much for Christian.

Tucson Bicycle Classic - Tucson, AZ

The whole family headed down to Tucson for a 3 day stage race in which both Chuck and Cameron participated in.  Because C would be racing too, we had to take two cars.  The boys left a little earlier than Hannah and me.  H and I did a little shopping and got the house cleaned up before we left.  We met the boys in the Saguaro National Park where we camped.  We camped near the start of the Time Trial which was Fridays race.  After the race, we went out to dinner and settled down for the night.  I had no problem falling asleep, but it wasn't long before the wind picked up and that was the end of my sleeping.  Chuck left early Saturday morning with Cameron for C's road race.  I was a little nervous about the road race with it being C's first, but luckily Chuck was able to follow him in the car.  It is about a 40 mile drive to the start of the road race.  So Chuck did not have time to get C back before his race started, so I picked up C and we went back to the camp site.  We went to the Saguaro NP visitor center where we went on a bird watching walk and completed the Jr. Ranger Program. After Chuck got back, we went to the International Wildlife Museum and went to dinner at our favorite restaurant in Tucson, Beyond Bread.  I didn't know what I was going to do if it was another windy night but fortunately it wasn't and I slept as well as could be expected while camping.  Chuck left early Sunday morning for his Circuit race and I took C a little later for his race.  Again, I was a little nervous for C but he safely completed the race.  After the races, we headed back to the campsite to pack up and drive home. I could tell that Cameron was a little nervous before and tired after his races, but never once did he complain.  There were 6 in his age group and he got dropped very quickly after the start, but he never once did he want to quit.  I was and am so impressed and proud of him!

Most Spirited

Christian

How I love this little guy!

Hannah

Hannah has a white board in her room and is always using it to write notes, make lists, do math, play school etc.
Here you can see her note she wrote before she went to bed.  It was picture day the following day and she wrote down and drew pictures of what she would wear and how she would do her hair.  She also made a note not to get honey on her while she had bagels at Einstein's for breakfast.

Here she had written a puzzle for her daddy.  However, he did not see it.  (He tends to be clueless). She said to me, "Daddy has not filled in the blanks."  I said to her, "Daddy is a little clueless sometimes."  And she said, "Well, I gave him all the vowels."

Cameron

Cameron has been racing bikes and winning most of the races.
It's not hard when there is usually a field of one.
