Mesa Sprint Triathlon 2022

One day early in the summer Hannah said she wanted to compete in a triathlon.  I am not sure what prompted her and she doesn't remember either, but I immediately found one that was nearby and far enough in the future that we had enough time to train. It Mesa Sprint Triathlon and it was perfect.  Hannah kept up her running from track and added miles.  She would often run with me but would also run alone.  She swam quite a bit on her breaks when lifeguarding and when we could, we swam together.  She would ride a couple times a week with Chuck.  I would usually go once a week with them and on occasion just she and I would ride.  She took to the bike right away and was already a natural swimmer and runner.  I let her ride my racing bike while I rode my older bike (with down tube shifters and all).  She never really cared about changing gears.  She said she liked the gear she was in.  Maybe next time, she'll use the gears to her advantage and shave off some time.

Prior to the race she asked Chuck what her strategy should be.  He said, "Go until you think you are going to throw up."  She wasn't impressed with that.  After telling her this is her first race, it is about getting experience, having fun and finishing, I told her she should race at a slightly uncomfortable pace but not so uncomfortable that she would wear herself out.  And I told Chuck he needed to give better advice. (insert eye roll)

Hannah had a great race!  The swim was done in the pool.  It was 400m serpentine style with athletes starting every 3 seconds.  Since she's a fast swimmer, she started before me.  The bike was 12 miles, 3 laps  of the 4 mile course.  Just as I was headed out, she was finishing her first lap.  I tried to catch her but couldn't.  I thought she saw me and that she was trying to not let me catch her but she swears she didn't see me.  The run was 3 miles.  It was more of a cross country course, but that kept it interesting.  Hannah finished 1st in her age group, even beating everyone in the next age group and finished 16th overall among the women.  I was pleased with my race (other than the people that think they can swim but can't and get in your way) and my time.  Everything worked out perfectly.  Melissa joined us as well.  Other than our Saturday runs and a couple of bike rides, we did not train together much.  I am not sure she'll do another one.  She struggled with the swim and had to borrow a bike.  But other than the swim, which she did finish, she had a good race.

Hannah's art

Just some pictures of Hannah's art.  Some old and some new.  A lot of which I have on display in the house.  She is super talented.

This is some of her early work which did not make the move.

These pieces were created during her ceramics class her Freshman year

Summer Backpacking 2022 - Lizard Head Wilderness, CO

As life gets busier, it gets harder to get a group together for 7-9 days for the summer backpacking trip.  The trip has always been 7 days, 6 nights of backpacking with 2 travel days, one on either side.  But some people think that 7 days of backpacking is just too long.  And with lifeguarding, football, school starting and a variety of other factors, this year's backpacking trip had to be a little shorter (much to Chuck's disappointment) for it to happen at all.  Cameron did not feel like he could miss work or football, so even with a shorter trip, he opted out.  Jonathan, along with Sarah and Abbie, and Hannah both preferred the shorter trip.  Chuck refused to plan the trip, so I chatted with Jonathan and we came up with a plan.  Chuck, Hannah and Christian would drive to CO and meet with Jonathan.  They would start backpacking that day, which was a Friday. They would backpacking thru Tuesday and Tuesday would be a short enough day that they could drive home Tuesday.  The plan worked out perfectly and everyone seemed to be okay with it (except maybe Chuck).  And everyone seemed to have a great time.

Summer 2022

It wasn't the most exciting summer but it wasn't boring either.  We didn't go on a big adventure but had lots of little adventures.

Summer started out with a Youth Conference in St. George for the kids 14 and up.  Neither one of the kids wanted to go, but I really wanted them too.  And since Cameron had missed out on the Trek, I felt pretty strongly that he needed to attend this one.  He had gotten trained as a lifeguard and the weekend they were going to be gone was opening weekend for the city pools and he was expected to work.  Hannah was planning on lifeguarding but she hadn't gone thru the training yet, so she wasn't expected to work that weekend.  I told Cameron to plan on going and once we knew what his work schedule was, we would go from there.  He was only scheduled to work on Monday, so Chuck, Christian and I decided to drive up to get him.

The kids left on Friday and stopped at Lee's Ferry on the way to St. George.  They stayed at the Dixie College dorms. I woke up Saturday morning to many pathetic text messages and voice memos from Hannah saying she wasn't sleeping, her dorm mates were being so loud, the bed was so uncomfortable, she wanted to die, etc.  I called her immediately and tried to make her feel better.  Chuck, Christian and I left later that morning to drive to St. George.  It's a really long drive! While we drove, the kids did a service project, went to the family history center and visited the temple, although they didn't get to go in because it was under construction.  That evening they went to the school's aquatic center.  We found a great restaurant after getting into town but had to wait quite a while, so it was late by the time we got to our hotel room.  I wasn't planning on seeing the kids but Hannah was so miserable, she insisted on staying with us at the hotel.  Sunday morning we drove to Pine Valley and went to church at the Pine Valley Chapel which is one of the original churches built by the pioneers.  We then went to Mountain Meadows were Murray Snow gave a very thorough lesson on the Mountain Meadow Massacre.  After that we went back to St. George and toured Brigham Young's winter home and the tabernacle.  We had to drive home after that so Cameron could be to work on Monday.  Hannah insisted on going home with us.  I tried to convince her to stay but she refused.  I was really disappointed in her.  The next day was her birthday and I knew the leaders had made plans to make her feel special, plus is was a day the wards were going to spend time outdoors.  But after later hearing how the night was that night, I was relieved she came home with us.  We have a lot of "special" kids in our stake that really make things miserable for their leaders and their peers.

Even though it was a quick trip, I enjoyed the time we were there.  The Pine Valley chapel has a special spirit and I learned so much about the Mountain Meadows massacre.  I am not sure the kids' testimonies were strengthened, but I hope on some level they were.

Shortly after we got home from the Youth Conference, Hannah went to Girl's Camp at Camp Lo Mia.  She wasn't all that excited to go but I somewhat insisted and she didn't have the best time.  But again, I hope on some level her testimony was strengthened.

Cameron and Hannah both worked quite a bit through out the summer and would have worked more if they would have been able to get more hours.  Cameron also had football practice every day during the summer.

Christian swam with the City of Tempe.
His best times were: Free - 36.75, Back - 46:69, Breast - 51.79, Fly- 51.29

After having paid for a room at The Great Wolf Lodge in December of 2020 and having to postpone because we all got Covid, we finally found the time to go.  We had a good time but it wasn't as great as I thought it would be.  There weren't many slides but we still enjoyed the ones that there were.  I think it would have been more fun if the kids would have been a little younger.  They seemed to have more for younger kids.

Zachary and his family come into town for a few days.  We spend some time with them that included going to a Diamondbacks game.

Other than the Summer Backpacking trip, which will get its own post, that sums up our summer.  Again, not the most exciting but we did not die of boredom.
