Lily's a college student

It's Lily's first day at NAU. Hard to believe! She is living in the dorms. And majoring in ? It will be an adjustment. (Hopefully, she won't have a lunch room nazi ruin the experience for her.) But I have no doubt she is going to love it.

BTW - technology can be pretty cool. She took this picture, e-mailed it to me and I'm posting it for you all to see, all in the same day!

Not enough time to play...

Although, C is still saying he does not want to go to school, he is not putting up much of a fight about it. I think he is adjusting and making friends. But, he does complain that there is not enough time to play, with which I can not argue! Last week we went to curriculum night, and I found out that they only have about 30 minutes total during the day when they are allowed to play on the playground. I am just sickened by this! And yes, a lot of what they do in class might be considered "play", it is still structured and has an objective. Kids that age need much more time than 30 minutes out of a 7 hour day for unstructured play.

Cerreta Chocolate Company

Several weeks ago, Kristin and I took the kids (all 6 of them) to tour a chocolate factory in Glendale. We got to walk thru one very small part of the factory, which the kids really enjoyed. The rest of the tour included some informative talk about the factory, which the kids could not have cared less about. But after the tour, they got to make a chocolate pizza. They all put on every "topping" available to them, which made for some interesting pizza. I had some of their pizza and it was really good chocolate. I would have bought some, but it was to crazy to pick any out. But I did manage to get a small chocolate bar for Chuck. On the way home, we stopped for lunch. It was pure craziness! Although, I don't know that the kids will remember the trip to the chocolate factory, I do hope they remember that we did a lot with them and for them!

I Don't Want to go to School Today

Well, I knew it would come sooner or later, but it came much sooner (years sooner) than I thought it would. For the last two days, C has said he does not want to go to school. On Tues., as we talked about his day, he said he didn't get lunch. Our conversation went like this:
Me: Why didn't you get lunch?
C: I forgot to put my lunch in the basket (when they get to school they put their lunch in a basket that is taken to the cafeteria)
Me: Did you tell someone?
C: Yes. I started to cry and told someone wearing an orange vest.
Me: What did she say?
C: She told me to stop crying.
Me: That is all she said?
C: Yes.
Me: What did you do?
C: I stopped crying and went to sit down.
Me: Did you tell your teacher?
C: No.
Well, upon further investigation, I found out that he was given a school lunch, but did not want to eat it. His teacher told him he could eat his lunch when he got back to the classroom, but he said he did not want to. I was relieved to hear that he did not have to sit at lunch without a lunch and that his teacher was willing to let him eat his lunch when they got back. I'm sure he was embarrassed that he forgot to put his lunch in the baskey, may have not been treated to kindly by the lunch room attendant and couldn't understand why he couldn't have his lunch. And now, in combination with some other things: he doesn't have enough time to play with Christian, he doesn't get to watch enough TV, there isn't enough time at recess, and there are too many rules, he doesn't want to go to school. It makes me sad that he already doesn't want to go to school. I started wondering this morning if I should have put him in a 1/2 day program. I don't think 5 yr olds need to be in school all day, but that's pretty much the way it is these days. In addition, for the last 5 years, Cameron has been a challenge for me, wanting to be entertained non-stop. It's exhausted me, it's exhausting me...and now H and baby C are doing the same things. But would it have been so bad to put him in 1/2 day??? Chuck says he would complain no matter what. It's his nature. He's probably right! I really hope he can get used to things and love it. And I hope while at school, he is surrounded by people who genuinely care about him and listen to him.

Christian at 7 months

The pictures say it all! This kid is to die for! As you can see, he is eating well and sleeping well. He is also moving well, getting around by rolling and army crawling.

Hannah's first day of Preschool

H was so excited to start preschool! She has been talking about it for months. She did not hesitate at all. She knows many of her classmates already. But best of all, her best friend, Natalie, is going to the same school. She of course didn't have too much to say after her first day. But she did tell me her favorite part was the singing.

First Day of Kindergarten

C started Kindergarten! He was so excited. We met the teacher and visited his classroom last week. He got a new red backpack with matching lunch box (even though there was nothing wrong with his old backpack) He got up about 5:30, which was a little early, so I put him in our bed while I got up to make the blueberry coffee cake he requested for breakfast. His school starts at 7:40 but they can be dropped off as early as 7:10. The plan is for Chuck to take him to school on his way to work, either walking or riding bikes. But for his first day, I met them there. They were running a little late, so I didn't get to see him go into the school because I had a class to go teach. He looked a little nervous when I left, but he was okay to be on his own.

Since he walked to school and has recess, I asked if he wanted to take a hat. That is the one he chose.

He of course didn't talk about his day too much. But he said he liked it. I asked if he made any new friends and he said he made everyone in his class his friend. He was excited to go back the next day.

Family/Ward Campout

Our ward hosted a campout and I decided to go. I decided to go because it was only for one night, I knew the kids would play with the other kids around and hopefully leave me alone, and I wanted Christian to have the experience camping as a baby (yes, I know he won't remember, but he will look at the pictures of C and H camping when they were babies and ask why I didn't take him). We camped NE of the valley about 2.5 hours. The kids were great! I am very impressed with their camping skills. I was great too. I didn't complain at all! There was a stream that was a little cold, but the kids loved it. It was cool and a bit drizzly on Saturday morning, making for a great run, minus the hills!
C caught a tadpole. He wanted to bring it home and said we could make it a house out of a box that we could cut windows in. I told him the tadpole would die and needed to be in the stream. After some tears, he settled for a video.

H was very adventurous and brave. She walked all over in the stream and even held a horny toad. (I pointed it out to her and she tried to catch it. I didn't want to catch it, so I called over a little girl C's age who had no problem catching it)

Christian decided he needed some real food, so he took a pancake off Chuck's plate and started eating it.

He was a great little camper!

Frustrated (yet again)

Today we took baby C for what I thought was going to be his pre-op appt. for his circumcision and (possible) hydrocil. (If you recall, his circ was started but not finished because the pediatrician thought he had hypospadias, which he did not. But by the time we figured that out, his circ could not be done in the office but has to be done out patient surgery.) So, after a long wait, the urologist said that he still has the hydrocil and wants to wait to see if it corrects itself (they are common but do usually correct themselves by 10-12 months) before doing the circ, because he'll just correct them at the same time. Now, originally my understanding was that they could/would do the circ as early as 6 months AND if he still had the hydrocil, they would correct that then also. IF I had known they wanted to wait to see if the hydrocil corrected itself before doing any type of surgery, I would have waited 3 more months to schedule the pre-op appt. That would have saved us having to go to this appt., wasting our time and money...BTW - does anyone in the medical profession care about wasting patients time and money?!? SO, in 3 months, we get to see the urologist again for another pre-op appt and then maybe we can get this surgery done. I have been told the sooner the better because as the baby gets older, it is more traumatic because they understand more of what's going on. Which is why I wanted to do this around 6 months rather than a year. The procedure and recovery won't be any riskier or more difficult however. So, do you think I want to pull out my hair! Yes, I do! I don't think we'll be having any more babies here, but if we were to, lesson learned: JUST DON"T CIRCUMCISE!
