Mountain Biking

Christian joined the Tempe Union Composite (TUC) mountain biking team and had two races in September.  The first was in Flagstaff and the second was in Prescott.  He loves mountain biking and being part of the team.  He usually finishes in the middle of the pack and has such a positive attitude.  I am not sure we are cut out for this world which involves RVs, big trucks and lots of traveling.  But we'll do what we can, maybe in a different fashion than most families do.

Billings Montana

I took a trip to Billings to visit Cameron and watch a Rocky football game. Chuck and Christian stayed behind for a bike race. We really didn't do much during the time I was there.  But it was nice to get away and spend time with Cameron.

Bearizona/Flagstaff

Emily wanted to take her girls to visit Hannah and go to Bearizona.  She invited Grannie Annie and Grandpa Larry, who were going to be coming this way for Fall break anyhow.  That led to Camera and Melody being invited as well as myself.  It was great to see Hannah and spend time with her but anytime my family gets together, there is a lot of whining, complaining and chaos, which I would rather do without.

August 2025

High School

Christian started his Sophomore year at Corona del Sol.

Kauai, HI

Hannah and I went to Kauai for her Senior Trip.

We left Sunday morning and arrived on Kauai in the mid afternoon.  After spending a long time in the car rental place, we got settled into our condo in Kapa'a and went to the Coconut Marketplace where we shopped a little and had something to eat.

The amount of chickens on Kauai was insane!

On Monday, we took a river boat tour to the Fern Grotto, hiked in Waimea Canyon, went to the Spouting Horn Blowhole and Poipu beach.

We hiked to a waterfall that was less than impressive.  The hike was steep and very dusty.  There were some beautiful views along with way by overall, this was not the best hike we have ever done. On the drive back towards Kapa'a, we stopped by a fruit stand and spent a small fortune on fruit.

On Tuesday, we took a boat tour of the Na'pali coast.  This was by far the highlight of the trip.  Then we had an amazing vegan meal in Hanalei, and went to Lyngate beach.

On Wednesday morning we had planned to hike to a waterfall but as we got close to the start, we were deterred by all the signs that said no trespassing, so we found another hike (Sleeping Giant) nearby which did not go to a waterfall but did get us to a 360 degree view of the island.  After the hike, we ate at another amazing vegan restaurant. We rented a boogie board and headed to Kealia beach.  I swore we would not get sunburned but we did.  That evening we learned how to make leis and attended a hula show.

On Thursday, we spent a little more time at Kealia beach for some boogie boarding before we had to return it and check out of our condo.  After packing up, we headed to the North side of the island.  We paid way too much to go the Kilauea lighthouse (we couldn't even go in the lighthouse) and wildlife preserve. Then we hiked to the Queen's Bath.  I was pretty nervous about this hike because it came with A LOT of warnings, but it wasn't too bad and we didn't die. We had another healthy, delicious meal at a food truck and headed to Anini beach. Anini beach had so much shade and no waves.  It was perfect.  If I were to go back to Kauai, I would spend more time at Anini beach.

We had some hits and misses on Kauai, but overall we had a great trip.  Kauai was bigger than I thought it would be, so we did a lot of driving.  (I did not love our rental car.  It was a Dodge Charger with a filthy windshield and no windshield washer fluid, making it very hard to see out of the windshield especially at night.) It did not have the spirit of "Aloha" I expected it to.  But if we were to go again, I now know a little bit more of what to do and where to go.

College

Hannah started at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff and Cameron continued at Rocky Mountain College.

Mountain Biking

Christian joined a the Tempe Union Composite (TUC) mountain biking team and had his first accident.  He probably needed a stitch or two on his arm but Chuck told him to clean it and put Neosporin and a bandage on it before I even saw it.

Haboob

We had a huge dust storm roll across the valley, leaving us a mess to clean up.

July 2025

Christian went to OFY (Outdoor for Youth).  OFY is located in Rexsburg, ID but he did the Teton Experience, so they spent most of their time at the Grand Tetons in WY.  Davis Farnsworth and Archer Williams went with him.  Chuck, Durrant (Archer's dad) and Owen (Davis's dad) drove them to ID.  Chuck had planned to leave on Saturday and take one day to get to ID, camping the two nights before the camp started on Monday.  Then they would backpack until the boys were ready to be picked up on Friday but that is not what Owen had planned.  And since men can't communicate, they ended up spending two nights in a hotel in Salt Lake City, doing a very short hike in Cottonwood Canyon while David and Archer complained.  After dropping the boys off on Monday morning, they backpacked (somewhere in Montana) until Thursday, then drove back to Rexsburg.  Owen and Davis flew home Thursday night. Chuck and Durrant stayed in a hotel in Rexsburg. They picked up Christian and Archer on Friday morning.  They drove to SLC and stayed in a hotel then drove the rest of the way home on Saturday.  Chuck and Durrant love to backpack but Owen was miserable.  It wasn't the trip Chuck had in mind.  But now he knows to communicate better and leave Owen home.

Christian had a great time, as I knew he would.  He said Archer and Davis were duds.  But I knew that would happen too.

Hannah visited Charity, who was working as a traveling tech, in Kalispell, MT and they spent some time in Glacier National Park.

Each summer Chuck organizes and takes a backpacking trip that lasts 7 days and 6 nights.  Cameron wanted to go this year but then he broke his foot in the Spring and that made things more complicated. He couldn't work for a couple of months and then he got a job working on the railroad, which was only a two month gig and he didn't want to take an entire week off.  Christian also likes to go but because he was trying to work and had already gone on two, one week camps, he didn't have the time to go.  In addition, Christian was already back in school (thanks to modified year round) when Chuck had planned to go.  Tim Woodward was the only one planning on going but he bailed at the last minute (no surprise there).  Chuck was determined to go by himself, which I didn't really approve of.  So, I contrived a plan which included him flying to Billings, spending a night with Cameron, then Cameron going with Chuck to Yellowstone for a few days.  Because Cameron didn't want to take too much time off work, he backpacked from Saturday to Wednesday and then went back to Billings. Once Cameron left, Chuck went to a different spot in Yellowstone and stayed until Saturday.  He drove back to Billings and flew home on Sunday.  Of course he had an amazing time and found the best campsite yet.
