Summer Backpacking Trip

One of the problems with having the perfect trip is that there are very few stories to tell.  Well, there's the time that Derek passed out, but we told the kids not to talk about that.

It was almost 15 hours in the car to the trailhead north of Pinedale, Wyoming.  Or as we like to measure things: 9 movies.  Just like last year, it was the Hatches and Royaltys.  The trail into the Wind River Range started out pretty mellow, but every day got tougher as we made our way up and down steep, rocky parts and past lakes that were extremely full after record snow falls.  Day 4 took us up into Indian Basin where it was still winter and arguably the most beautiful place we ever hiked with deep snow and mostly-frozen lakes.  After several miles in snow and crossing frozen ice bridges, we finally met our match.  We needed crampons and ice axes to climb up to the final pass, the ice bridge ahead of us over deep near-frozen water was cracked in 6 places, and an extremely dark thunderstorm was rolling down the mountain.  Strike 3.  But we turned tail with our heads held high.  Run away; run away...

Sooooo, the camping was amazing, the hiking was exciting, the weather was a nice mix of sunny mornings and afternoon thunderstorms, and the kids got along remarkably well.  Well, maybe they did argue a bit about who got to sleep in the bivy sack (I didn't see that coming,) but the rest of it was remarkable.  Of course, after being home for 3.7 seconds, the whole house of cards collapsed and they degenerated into hot, whiny messes.  But it was nice while it lasted.
