Covid-19 Update

Almost a year and a half later and we are still talking about Covid-19?!  Yes we are. In March, we were able to return to two hour church.  In order to follow social distancing guidelines we are holding Primary in the Primary and Relief Society rooms since they are bigger.  This means we do not have individual classes.  We have combined Jr as one class and Sr as another.  It is working out well.

Around the beginning of May, mask mandates were removed and receiving the vaccine became very easy and was approved for children 12 and over.  Cameron, Hannah and I received the vaccine.  We thought things were headed back to normal.  We were told the vaccine would prevent those vaccinated from getting Covid and spreading Covid.  Chuck held out for a while, but finally gave in and got his vaccine in July.  Mostly because he did not want to have to wear a mask when he went to work.  The recommendation was that those who were not fully vaccinated should continue to wear a mask.  He went back to the office 3 days a week (against his wishes) in July.  Enter the Delta variant.  After about 3 weeks, Honeywell told employees they could work from home or wear a mask at all times, vaccinated or not, while at work.  Chuck opted for home.

We started hearing that the vaccine was not as effective as it was believed to be and although it does largely prevent one from being hospitalized or dying from Covid, it does not prevent one from getting Covid, particularly the Delta variant.  And so the recommendation has once again changed, now encouraging everyone to wear masks, vaccinated or not.  I would venture to say not half of the people have gone back to wearing masks.  I am seeing almost no one wear masks at the Y and not many more than before at church.  The kids started the school year with masks being encouraged but they could not be mandated because of a law the governor signed.  However, that law does not go into effect until the 29th of September so schools have now said the kids have to wear masks.  I am sure when the legislature reconvenes on September 29th, they will interpret that law was meant to go into effect immediately.  At that point, lawsuits will probably be filed, but for what?  What is done is done.

The number of positive Covid cases has sky rocketed but deaths have decreased.  Hospitals are supposedly being over run with Covid patients but we are being told that those getting Covid and being hospitalized for it are those who have not received the vaccine.  The narrative now is that there is a pandemic of the unvaccinated and there is a big push to get everyone vaccinated.  Originally the narrative was that we needed to prevent hospitals being overwhelmed and deaths.  With the vaccine, the death rate has declined drastically, now it seems like the narrative is we need to prevent Covid period.  One way the "experts' think that will happen is if everyone wears a mask.  I do not believe that masking is going to prevent the spread nor do I believe we can prevent people getting the virus.  But time will tell.

About two weeks after the start of school, Christian started having cold symptoms (which are also Covid symptoms).  A couple days later, Cameron and Hannah started feeling bad.  I was pretty sure it was a cold.  On a Monday, he felt pretty bad, so I kept him home from school.  I was told he had to have a negative Covid test before he could return to school.  That evening we went to a Covid testing site and waiting in the car for an hour and 20 minutes to get him tested.  I kept him home on Tuesday.  We did not have the test results nor was he feeling much better.  The results were texted to me in the middle of the night on Tuesday and they were negative.  He went to school on Wednesday.  In all seriousness, all the kids felt worse and took longer to recover from the cold they caught than they did with Covid.  In fact, Cameron felt so bad that he came home from practice early on Monday and chose not to go on Tuesday.  I did email the superintendent and told her that Covid is not the only illness going around and if kids had to have a negative Covid test before going back to school then they should be offered at the school.   This is all so frustrating and there appears to be no end in site.
