Ages Eight, Six and Three .... remembering what they were like

Cameron is eight and in the 3rd grade. He is 4 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 58 lbs.   He enjoys riding his bike and has just started riding a bike with gears, which he thinks is very cool.  He loves to watch TV, movies and play games on the computer.  He likes to be read to more than he likes to read himself.  I read the Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief series with him and we are working on the Harry Potter Series.  He and Chuck are reading the Lord of the Rings series. But he does enjoy reading each night before he goes to bed.  When he wants to read something short, he goes for something like "Little Critter".  And at times, I have heard him reading to Christian.  When he wants to read something more challenging, he enjoys "The Box Car Children", "Magic Tree House", and to my disapproval, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid."  Over the summer, we read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because that is how I often describe Cameron.  He is helpful and selfish, friendly and grumpy, caring and tyranical, acutely aware and completely clueless.  We constantly receive compliments for teachers that Cameron is such a hard worker, good student, etc.  But if you ask him how school was, he will most likely say, "It was horrible."  His main complaint about school is that many of his classmates don't listen to direction and a lot of time is spent waiting on them to do so. Each morning, he says he does not want to go.  And when it is time to do homework, I'm sure he'd rather the world come to an end than have to do it.  But I do know he is a good student and hard working.  He ran for student congress and won!  However, he had little to say about their first meeting.  C has started taking on more responsibility in the home.  He is mowing the lawn and taking out the recycling.  He is playing volleyball thru the YMCA with me as the coach.  He is a great little player.  He isn't afraid to go after the ball and it doesn't phase him that he is the only boy in the league.  C has also started piano lessons.  He loves to go to his lessons and he does practice.  But I had to provide a little incentive for that to happen more regularly.  I pay him 25 cents for each 15 minutes he practices.  C is completing a second year as a wolf cub, but we are working on electives, belt loops and pins that he has not yet achieved.  And C loves to spend time with his friends.  His best friends still remain to be Corbin and Carson even thought they have both moved away and we don't see them as often as we used to.

Hannah is six and in the 1st grade.  She is about 31/2 feet tall and weighs about 40 lbs.  She is a happy little girl that you don't want to upset.  Like Cameron, she can have a dual personality.  However, most of the time she is very helpful.  But she can be very sassy.  She loves to play pretend...house, restaurant, school etc.  She also loves to draw and color.  She loves school and unlike Cameron, she can't wait to do her homework.  But is very diligent when she works and doesn't ever feel the pressure to work quickly.  She loves to read and write.  We have been reading the Little House Series.  We are currently working on Farmer Boy.  Because it is about Almanzo rather than Laura and Mary, she does not enjoy it as much.  She will often read for an hour in her bed after she has been tucked in.  Hannah loves to change clothes and she has a style all her own.  She enjoys brushing her hair and has been willing to let me try many different styles. Sometimes she creates her own and asks me to do it.  Her latest "do" is two pony tails on the sides and two braids in the back.  Hannah is working on her second year as a Daisy Girl Scout.  Her best friends are Natalie and Kendra.

Christian is a typical three year old.  He has two speeds, full steam ahead and complete stop.  He can be outgoing and shy.  He can be adventurous and hesitant.  He be tough and wimpy.  He is very happy most of the time and usually very helpful.  But as he learns to do new things, he can get very frustrated.  He loves preschool and as with all my kids, he is a great student.  When he is not at school, he is my best buddy.  We do everything together.  My favorite thing to do is take a nap, but that doesn't happen very often.  His favorite thing to do is go to the zoo.  He loves to be out and about, so we grab a friend quite often and go for a field trip.  He loves his friends Davis and Knox.  He is my best sleeper, almost never getting out of bed at night.  And sometimes he will just put himself to be because he is tired.  Christian plays with anything...cars, dolls, barbies, legos.  He is a great independent player, but I hear quite often, "Mom, play with me."  He is really a lot of fun to have around.

Our Summer

Summers can be hard in the Valley of the Sun.  But we managed to stay busy and make the best of the heat.  Of course, the summer included several backpacking trips and lots of swimming.  I had all three kids signed up for swim lessons.  Cameron and Hannah enjoyed them and continued to improved their swimming skills.   For the first year, Christian was old enough to participate on his own.  And after sitting on the pool deck for 2 summers, I thought he'd be so excited.  But he was not.  He refused to get in the water without me.  And I refused to pay for parent-tot classes.  I didn't force him, but I was so frustrated because I know he would have loved it.  Maybe next year.  Hannah took a ballet class, Cameron a ceramics class and we spent lots of time with friends.  We spent one night at the Arizona Grand Hotel and had an amazing time at the Oasis Water Park.

A family that rides together stays together...

the first ride
riding to church

... and when there is no room for mom, the family is even more likely to stay together!

We have 4 adult singles, 2 tandems, 4 kid singles, 2 tricycles, and NOW a tandem trail-a-bike in our garage (along with two cars!).  On the back porch, we have a trailer and a single train-a-bike.  Needless to say, we are a little obsessed with bicycling in our family.  You'd think I'd ride more than I do.  But Christian said it best after they bought the tandem trail-a-bike.  "We bought a double alley cat.  Dad will ride the front of the tandem, Cameron in the back.  Hannah in the front of the double alley-cat and me in the back.  And there is no room for you!"  Over the summer, Cameron started riding tandem with Chuck.  He was just barely able to fit on the back.  They would even go on the Friday Morning Ride (the FMR).  All the guys were super impressed with C.  Once school started, C asked if he could just be late to school on Fridays.  I actually would have allowed that.  But it was the getting up at 5am on a school day I wasn't willing to allow.   C recently started riding a bike with gears.  The bike is about 2 sizes too big for him, but he loves having the gears.  Our next goal is to get Hannah up on two wheels.
