2018 Highlights

In January, Christian turned 8, was baptized, became a Cub Scout and started taking piano lessons!

We also took a trip to Farmington, NM to visit aunts, uncles and cousins and say good-bye to my grandmother, Maxine Rhien, who died a few weeks after our visit.  She lived an amazing life that was richly blessed and we were excited for her to get to move onto the next stage of life.

In February, the kids competed in a Spartan Race (joined by our neighbor Jackson), Cameron played baseball for the middle school and I got to watch Chuck race (a rare occasion).

In March, Hannah and Christian got to go indoor skydiving and Cameron and Christian started playing Little League.  This was Christian's 1st year and Cameron's 2nd.

April was consumed by Little League practices and games.

May was a big month!  Both boys finished up the Little League Season with 2nd place finishes in their divisions.  And Cameron hit his first home run!  Chuck took Christian on a trip to California to stay on the Queen Mary.  Cameron turned 13 and Hannah turned 11,   Chuck and I also celebrated birthdays.  And Hannah finished the 5th grade.

In June, Hannah had her annual dance recital.  Hannah and Christian swam for the Dobson Dolphins and Cameron attended band camp at ASU.

In July, Cameron and Chuck went to Camp Geronimo.  I took the kids to Farmington to visit cousins, aunts and uncles.  And Chuck took the kids on their annual summer backpacking trip.

In August, Cameron started 8th grade, Hannah 6th grade and Christian 3rd grade.  And Cameron started tackle football.

In September, Chuck and I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary,  Cameron made the soccer team and Hannah made the volleyball team.

In October, Chuck took Cameron and Hannah and a Californian adventure and I took Christian on a Hawaiian adventure.

In November, we ran the Turkey Trot.

In December, we celebrated the birth of Christ. Oh and Cameron's football team won the Championship!

We are so thankful for all of our many blessings!  Here's to 2019!

Christmas 2018

We started our Christmas preparations by buying our live Christmas tree.  We didn't have a time when we could all go together, so I took the kids one day after school without Chuck.  We never had a big enough chunk of time to get the tree decorated as a family, so once we got the tree in the house, the boys helped put the lights on and little by little we put the decorations on.

We decorated graham cracker houses with the Hatches and Hamblins.  It was the first year without Kristin and her absence is certainly noticeable when we get together in these settings.

We had 4 prizes but we split the kids up into a younger and older age group.  Pyper and Carson won the older group and Hannah and Christian won the younger.  Christian won Best Overall and Hannah won Best Effort. (I can't remember what Pyper and Carson won.)

We took a trip to Gilbert to donate at the Giving Machine.  After waiting in line for 45 minutes, we donated 2 chickens, jump ropes, soccer balls and school shoes.  We also donated water.

We attended church on Sunday and had dinner with Camera, Melody, Emily, Rylee and Raygan.  And as usual, my pictures didn't turn out very well.

From Santa Cameron got a Xbox headset, Hannah got art supplies and Christian got a scooter.

On Christmas Eve we had dinner at the neighborhood potluck and read the Christmas story before bed.  On Christmas morning we got up, opened presents and had a hearty breakfast.  Chuck and I went for a run in perfect weather (shorts and t-shirts).  Camera and Melody came over for dinner.  Per the kids request, we had potato soup and bread.  We don't have many traditions but they did include watching Elf and Rudolf. This year, although they got plenty, the kids seemed to have gotten a little less.  And that is preferred by me.  Of course it is fun and exciting to give and receive and the kids were very thoughtful in their gifts but we of course recognize that we are celebrating the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ and there is no better, more perfect gift than what we have already been given.

Football, Dance, Piano and more Football

In the Spring when the Little League All-Star coach called to let Cameron know he did not make the team, Cameron's love of football came up as well as our poor experience with Pop Warner.  As it turned out, this coach, Coach Chad, also coached tackle football for NYS and he insisted Cameron would have a better experience playing for him.  We were hoping Cameron would rather play Fall Little League but when given the choice, he chose football and joined Chad's team.  They practiced 2 nights a week for 2+ hours and once games started, they had a game every Saturday, none of which were close in distance so the game would take up much of the day.  The season started out a little rough, but great strides were made and they ended up winning the championship!  I was thrilled because now Cameron can not say he's never won anything.  Cameron played center when on offense and linebacker when on defense.

Hannah continues to dance at Dance 101.  The great thing about dance is that there is only one recital  once a year.  And classes are closed to parents (so we don't feel obligated to watch) except when it is Parent Viewing.  This year Hannah is taking a Jazz and Contemporary Class.

Hannah and Christian are still taking piano lessons.  Christian had his first recital.  He and Hannah are both quite good.  And would be even better if they practiced more!

First Semester of the 2018/2019 School Year

The kids were extremely busy the first semester of this school year.  Hannah made the JV volleyball team and was awarded "Most Improved" at the end of the season.  She enjoyed playing volleyball  and made some good friends.  But it did require a lot of time which was a little overwhelming for her.  Cameron decided to try out for the soccer team.  He was also playing football (more on that later) and we weren't excited for him to be playing two sports at the same time but we didn't discourage him from trying out because we didn't think he'd make the team.  Well, he did.  We were all quite surprised, including Cameron.  He did get playing time and he played well (except for that one hand ball that cost them the game).  Most importantly, it kept him busy and Cameron loves to be busy.  But that meant it kept Chuck and me really busy as well.  Christian joined the Rubix Cube team at school and was able to compete in the tournament.  He was on the 2nd Fuller team.  The teams of six raced to see who could solve 25 Rubix Cubes the fastest.  If a kid could not solve the whole thing, they solved as much as they could and gave it to someone else to finish.  Thankfully Christian is still young enough he is not keeping us too busy.  In addition, both Cameron and Hannah are in the band, which had concerts. Hannah took dance as an elective, and they had a performance at the end of the semester.  The theme was Avengers, which is why Hannah is green with red hair. So between volleyball, soccer, football, band, dance and all our other extra-curricular activities, we had a couple very very busy months.  At times we thought we might not survive.

Scout update

Cameron was recently awarded his Star scout and Christian spent a day at a leader's house working on making fire, cooking, shooting, and tying knots.  He had so much fun.

Thanksgiving 2018

As for the past 18 years, we started Thanksgiving day with the Turkey Trot.  I ran the 10K with Cameron and Chuck ran the 5K with Hannah and Christian.  Unfortunately Cameron did not throw up this year but that meant he didn't push it as hard as he did last year.  Not only did he not want to throw up again, but he did not want to get DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).  That prompted me to tell quite a few stories about DOMS to help keep his mind off the pain.  My favorite part of the race this year was when I was encouraging him to go get the old guy in front of us with the hunch back and he said, "Stop pressuring me Mom."  Cameron did do some training, running with me and working up to 4 miles over a week and a half.  Hannah and Christian humored me with one training run that was ~ a mile.  Cameron hasn't run with me since the race.  We had a very relaxing, quiet day the rest of the day.  It was just our family for dinner.  And it was a good dinner!
