Covid - 19 Update

Well, it has been a full year since the world was turned upside down.  The rate of infections in AZ is very low and the number of hospitalizations and deaths is even lower.  Everyone in the state is now eligible to get the vaccine.  The elderly and teachers got priority.  However, there are quite a few not wanting to get the vaccine, so it is available to all sooner than expected.  I am not sure if the infection rate is down because of the vaccine or due to the fact that a large number of people have gotten the virus.  It has been some time that anyone we know has gotten it.  We are still wearing masks everywhere (even outside at school baseball games) although the governor did take away the ability for cities and counties to mandate masks, private businesses can still require that they are worn.  The kids are still required to wear them at school and they are still required at the Y.  By the way, the kids are back in school!  They started back in person two weeks ago just after Spring Break.  They were planning on going back but just before Spring Break the governor said that all public schools had to provide an in-person option.  That works in our favor because it will make it harder for the school to shut down again. So for us, with the exception of wearing masks, church not being back to a 2 hour block and Chuck working from home, our lives are pretty much back to normal.  The boys are playing baseball.  Cameron is umpiring for little league.  Hannah is running cross country.  I am back to being a taxi driver.

Spring Break 2021

I really wanted to get out and do something during Spring Break but working around Chuck and Hannah's quick trip to Cincinnati, the boys' baseball practices and scrimmages, and watching Emily's girls, a free day and night was hard to find.  In fact, so hard to find that Cameron ended up staying home by himself (which he said was the best 2 days of his life).  I have wanted to explore more of AZ and since we had never been to Sedona, I decided that would be our destination.

We left about noon on Wednesday. We stopped and took a small nature hike at Bell Rock when we first got into Sedona and went to the Church of the Holy Cross.  We checked into a bed and breakfast and soaked in the hot tub before we headed downtown for dinner.  It had gotten a little late and Sedona appeared to be a ghost town after dark.  But we did find a restaurant that had a large variety of options.  However, we didn't get to do any shopping before everything shut down.

We had a really good breakfast before we headed out for the day.  We started with the Airport Loop hike.  It was about 3 miles and had some really nice views of Sedona.  The weather was a little chilly but comfortable with a jacket.  We even got a little bit of hail.  We only saw two other people on the hike.  After that, we hiked to the Devil's Bridge, which was the place to be.  We had to hike about a mile before the trail officially started.  Once we were close to the bridge the trail did get steep and a little gnarly but it was worth it.  Sedona is beautiful, probably the most beautiful place I have been.  The colors are so bright and vivid.  It was like nothing I have ever seen.  After that hike, we went to the Sedona Heritage Museum, had lunch downtown and did a little shopping.  We had to get home for a baseball scrimmage so we didn't get to stop at some of the Indian ruins as originally planned.  Overall it was a pretty great trip.

Happy 11th Birthday Christian!

We started Christian's birthday celebrations on the Saturday before his birthday.  We took 3 of his best friends to play mini-golf.  We played a round of 18 holes before a couple of the kids were ready to move on.  They REALLY wanted to drive the bumper cars, so I did let them do that even thought I don't think it's worth the money.  We had ice cream cake at the house and the kids played for a bit longer.

On Sunday we had dinner with Camera and Emily and their families.  Christian requested breakfast burritos.

On Wednesday, (his actual birthday) we went to dinner at Mongolian BBQ.

I can't believe my baby is 11!  At age 11 Christian weighs 79 pounds and is 4 feet 8 inches tall.  He is such a sweet, talented, smart, studious and handsome boy.  He has been reading a lot this year.  This year, on his own, he has read many of the Wings of Fire books, most of the City of Ember series, and he just finished the 5th Harry Potter Book.  With Chuck he read the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series and is now reading the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series.  He still loves to play with Legos and loves math.  He also loves video games, but playing with Cameron almost always ends in frustration.  He is still taking piano lessons, but he has to be constantly reminded to practice.  He doesn't love playing the piano but he does believe he will regret it if he quits.  This last year was a hard one to be active and outside.  He doesn't like to go out alone and it doesn't usually end well when he goes out with Cameron.  But if he has someone to play with, he loves to play outside (as long as it's not football).  Christian can be quite the talker.  He will talk and tell stories to anyone.  He can often be heard recapping what he read, what happened in a movie or what happened on the video game he was playing.  Although I can see the pre-teen/teen attitude creeping in, he is still a pretty sweet and helpful boy.  When Christian is a jerk to me, he always realizes it and apologizes.  What a great trait!  He believes he loves me more than I love him.  But I guarantee that's not possible!

For Christmas, Christian made Cameron a coupon book.  I thought it was the cutest thing ever.  However, he probably regrets giving it to Cameron at times.  Cameron is definitely taking full advantage of it.

Some photos that did not make it into a post but are worth seeing.

Hannah playing with my phone.

Some of Hannah's first works of art created during the Covid pandemic.

Pool time with Melody.

Father's Day

Cameron got a road bike because Chuck can't say no to buying a bike.  But he really has ridden it.  Unlike the unicycle.  I guess Chuck can't say no to buying a unicycle either.

Rylee and Hannah

Hannah and I had gone for a run at South Mountain.  Chuck and Cameron went on a bike ride in the foothills and their course happens to pass where my car was parked.  When H and I were done, I found this note on my car.  I knew right away Cameron had left it.  The funniest part is that he had to have planned this in advance because he doesn't ride with paper and pen.

These paintings H did for Jonathan and his family.

H got a ukulele for her birthday that she got to build and paint.

Christian organized the candy he got for Christmas and snacked on it during school.

I have these pictures on the frig and when one of the kids gets mad at another, they cover their face with magnets.  I am not sure who was responsible here but my guess is Hannah since all of Cameron's faces are covered and then Hannah's face is covered in some.  Stuff like this happens ALL. THE. TIME.

Highlights of 2020 - the year of Covid.

January - Christian celebrated his 10th Birthday.

February - Christian completed the Spartan Race.

March - We were able to attend the Phoenix and Tucson temples, spend some time in the Tucson area, and attend a Spring training game during Spring Break.  We were lucky to have a fun Spring Break.  The world basically went into a blind panic at the end of the break.

April - We celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus Christ,

May - We celebrated Cameron's (15), Rebekah's, Hannah's (13) and Chuck's birthdays. And the boys went on a wicked cool backpacking trip to Hannah Hot Springs.

June - The boys went backpacking in CO and the girls enjoyed some quiet time together.

July - We went to Kings Island in Cincinnati, OH.

August - Rebekah met a couple college roommates (Jeri and Elesa) in San Diego for a few days. Cameron got to play some football. Hannah finally got her bike that was ordered before her birthday but she did have to settle for a white one instead of yellow.

September - Hannah and Christian started joining me for runs or hikes at South Mountain.  Sometimes they would both go but it usually worked out better if they went one at a time.

October - Christian got to play some baseball (catching here) and Cameron got to umpire.

November - Cameron got his learner's permit.  He is learning to drive on a standard.

December - Cameron got his braces off.  (He did Invisalign so no one really knew he had braces). And Charity come for a visit.

It was definitely a weird and crazy year with much negativity and disappointment. Although it is easier said than done, I tried to encourage everyone to look for the good that came out of Covid and to make the most out of the situation.  I asked everyone to give me two or three positive things that resulted from Covid.

Christian said there were less people when you went out and we had more family time.  With that family time, we played a lot of card games and a lot of four square.  We also watched a lot of movies and read more.

Hannah said she had more time to develop her talents.  She took online guitar lessons and spent a lot of time drawing and painting.  Hannah also said it made you appreciate what you have.

Cameron said he gained a greater appreciation for in person school.  He also had more time to work out.

I appreciated having a less hectic schedule.  I also enjoyed not having to take the kids to and from school or pack lunches.

Chuck said he enjoyed having more time to sleep and better quality riding time.

So although it will probably be remembered as THE WORST YEAR EVER, maybe it wasn't so bad after all.
